The village Förste, a little village between Westerhöfer forest and Lichtenstein in the Söse valley, was first mentioned in 990. Today Förste has a population of ca. 2.000.

In the years 1844-1845, the Söse bridge was built between Nienstedt and Förste, replacing the passage and the older footbridge.
With the opening of the narrow-gauge district railway, Förste received the railway connection in the year 1898. In 1967 the district railway was shut down.

From 1898 to 1939 Förste had a dairy cooperation. The school house was built 1913-1914.

Förste is also well-known through its mineral and medicinal water. Since the 60ties mineral and medicinal water is being bottled in Förste. The Grafenquelle (earl's spring) is Europe's largest mineral and medicinal spring.

The famous wreath riding takes place in Förste every year at Whitsun. In the year 1972 Förste was incorporated into the town Osterode, Harz.
