St. Jacobi Palace-Church

Osterode, Harz

Excavations proved, that there was a chapel here in the 12th-century already. Nearby was the probably Osterrode's oldest market.

A Cistercian convent was situated here until the Reformation in 1561.
Then a reconstruction into an aristocratic palace took place, but
the St. Jacobi-church was conserved as palace church.

A fundamental re-building of the church followed in 1751/52 and received then its present form.
The west and east wing were pulled down in 1894-1899.
So that today only the tower at the north wing (with the church nave) as well as the south wing with the local court is still standing.

Inside, one can admire the well worth seeing altar, the Engelhard organ, a famous epitaph by the German-Japanese Peter Hartzing and the romantic baptismal font.
